Hours Calculator

Find the hours between two times, subtract an unpaid break and handle overnight shifts.

Calculator

h / min

Enter a start, finish and unpaid break. Choose the end day when you need to distinguish zero hours from a full 24-hour shift.

Your inputs stay in this browser. Reset restores example values. No account or server submission.

  • Unpaid breaks—

Clock calculations use wall-clock minutes, without time zones or daylight-saving adjustments. An earlier end time means next day in automatic mode. Equal start and end times mean zero, unless Next day is selected.

How to use this calculator

Read each clock time in your browser’s local 12-hour or 24-hour display. The stored value is a 24-hour clock time. Only unpaid breaks should be subtracted. Automatic mode treats a finish earlier than the start as the following day.

Formula

Total minutes = End time − Start time + δ − Unpaid break (minutes); δ ∈ {0, 1440} min

Worked example

09:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes. Subtract a 30-minute unpaid break to get 8 hours, or 8.00 decimal hours. 22:00 to 06:00 with a 30-minute break gives 7 hours 30 minutes.

Assumptions and limits

A single shift is limited to 24 elapsed hours. The result is scheduled wall-clock time, not a timezone-aware timestamp difference. No employer rounding is applied.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter a full 24-hour shift?

Use equal start and end times and select Next day. Automatic mode interprets equal clock times as zero hours.

Are the results decimal hours or clock time?

Both are shown where useful. Decimal hours divide minutes by 60; a duration such as 7 h 30 min is 7.5 hours.

Are my times uploaded?

No. Calculations run in your browser. Saved inputs remain on this device until reset or cleared in browser site-data settings.
